Patrick Brouder

Patrick is an Associate Professor at Thompson Rivers University and sustainable tourism adviser based in Coast Salish Territory. His work in western Canada focuses on three interrelated areas of innovation in tourism across the province - Indigenous tourism (as a form of endogenous economic development in partner communities), creative tourism (in creative outposts in rural and remote BC), and tourism evolution (post COVID-19 processes of recovery for the tourism economy all across rural BC).

Patrick is a senior editor for the academic journal Tourism Geographies and is Past President of the Canadian Rural Revitalization Foundation. He also serves on the Steering Committee of the International Polar Tourism Research Network (IPTRN) and co-organised (with Suzanne de la Barre) the 6th IPTRN Conference and Community Tour in Yukon in 2018.

Originally from Limerick, Ireland, Patrick has been working with communities in northern Sweden and western Canada since 2008. He was a Banting Postdoctoral Fellow (2015-2017) at Brock University - examining tourism development across the Niagara region of Canada. Recent projects include: Towards Sustainable Regional Tourism Development in the Heart of the Great Bear Rainforest and Creative Economies: Exploring the Nexus of Culture and Tourism in Yukon and Northern BC. Patrick Brouder was the 2020 recipient of the Roy Wolfe award for outstanding contributions to the field and discipline of recreation, tourism, and sport geography.
